Today was an interesting day. The weather is gorgeous. Today's high was low 60's, not a cloud in the sky. Could not ask for anything better.
We met at 8:00 for breakfast. Had a traditional Irish breakfast, then started out day. Our first stop was the Leprechaun National Museum. Did you know there was one? After that we went to Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells. Trinity College was founded in 1592 by a charter of Queen Elizabeth. A principal building at the University is the Old Library. This building was constructed in 1712. In its treasury the Book of Kells is secure and available for public viewing. The Book of Kells contains lavishly decorated copy, in Latin, of the four gospels. It was produced over 1,000 years ago by the monks of Iona, Ireland. The contents of the Book of Kells contain:
The extant book contains preliminary matter, the complete text of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, and the Gospel of John through John 17:13. The remainder of John and an unknown amount of the preliminary matter is missing and was perhaps lost when the book was stolen early in the 11th century. The remaining preliminary matter consists of two fragmentary lists of Hebrew names contained in the Gospels, Breves causae (Gospel summaries), Argumenta (short biographies of the Evangelists), and Eusebian canon tables. It is probable that, like the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Books of Durrow and Armagh, part of the lost preliminary material included the letter of Jerome to Pope Damasus beginning Novum opus, in which Jerome explains the purpose of his translation. It is also possible, though less likely, that the lost material included the letter of Eusebius to Carpianus, in which he explains the use of the canon tables.[27] Of all the insular Gospels, only the Lindisfarne manuscript contains this letter.
I am sure that most religious scholars are familiar with these works.
After leaving Trinity we visited the Irish Whiskey Museum. This museum takes you on a journey through time and discussed the intriguing tale of the development of Irish whiskey. Afterwards we had lunch at the Queen of Tarts. Harry, Amanda, and Linda had ordered a sandwich and I ordered a tart. Very good. Then we went clothes shopping for Amanda. We made it to Ireland, with our luggage, with the exception of Amanda's. Her suitcase, containing all of her clothing, jacket, and anything else a traveler needed, was somewhere in Paris. It was a joyful time, when late this evening, her luggage finally made its arrival into Ireland. Tomorrow we pick up the rental car and drive to Waterford Castle. The real adventure starts then. Harry is driving, wrong side of road, wrong side of car. More tomorrow night.
